How Do Electronic Keypad Locks Work?

Privacy and security have always been an important part of a civilized society, this is imminent even in the smallest facet of our lives. Take for example the lockers found in your favourite gym facility, most would have a door assigned for each and each of these would have a corresponding lock. These locks can come in a variety of types and design. While most use the traditional key and tumbler design, some locks use technology that is far more advanced. Such locks are the electronic keypad locks and as the name suggests requires the users to input a code into the lock omitting the use of the key. In this article, we will be discussing how these electronic keypad locks work.

The Keypad Lock

There are mainly two varieties when it comes to the keypad lock system in electronic locks. Individual locks and locks that are part of a larger security system.

Individual locks contain all the hardware and controls of the lock in a single unit, while those locks that are part of a larger system tend to draw their power from elsewhere in the facility.

Whether the lock is part of a security system or a standalone, the actual lock mechanism works by needing a small electrical current to release the lock bolt. The current is generated when the correct code is entered into the keypad.

Handling the Keypad

The keypads used for each electronic keypad locks can vary greatly. Some contain buttons that are labelled with number and letters, while others contain up to a full 12-button keypad similar those found on telephones.

The codes used for the locks are typically four (4) or six (6) digits and requires the user to enter them in the correct order.

Ones the code is entered correctly, a tone or sound will indicate that the lock has been disengaged.

A good lock offers a time delay after several failed attempts at entering the code.

Updating Codes

For better security, keypad locks allow users to change the codes used to unlock them to new ones of their choosing.

Frequent updating of codes are generally encouraged as they provide additional security in case a previous code has been discovered by others.

The method by which code is changed depends upon the lock manufacturer and whether the lock is a stand-alone or is part of a larger security system. There are typically no restrictions on how many times the codes can be replaced.

Powering Lock

Because keypad locks require power to operate, having a power source available is very important.

Standalone locks often operate through the use of standard batteries as a main power source.

These batteries can be changed periodically to ensure optimal operation.

Locks that are part of larger security often draws power from the security system itself, though some of these locks may operate using a battery as a backup power source.

Most electronic keypad locks are designed so that disabling their power source does not open them, without power the locks remain locked.
